Approximately 25% of the global vaccine market comprises conjugated vaccines with sales exceeding €2.5 billion in 2006. However, the production of these vaccines is highly complex and expensive. The polysaccharides and proteins used have to be purified from fermented bacteria in various steps and conjugated in vitro through further reactions and finally purified.
GlycoVaxyn´s proprietary technology enables the development and production of immunogenic glycoproteins for use in vaccines in a simplified process that significantly reduces costs compared to traditional vaccine technology. This makes previously unattainable markets attainable. These markets are as follows:
1. developing countries with healthcare systems and economies that cannot afford conventional conjugated vaccines, and
2. industrial countries where vaccines for a number of severe bacterial infections still are missing, and
3. indications which traditional vaccine technology cannot address (enabling technology)
By the production of less costly vaccines and the production of vaccines for indications which cannot be targeted by traditional vaccine technology, new markets can be addressed.
